Agent and IDE integration

This document is written for code agents (LLM-powered coding assistants) to integrate AgentShield into arbitrary development environments. It is structured as a machine-readable specification with copy-pasteable commands and verification steps.

If you are a code agent reading this: follow the steps below to integrate AgentShield into the user's environment.


Prerequisites

Integration Overview

AgentShield mediates two channels — the two chokepoints agent frameworks converge on, which is why integration is per-protocol rather than per-framework: a new harness needs a thin hook adapter, not an SDK. Integrate one or both channels depending on the environment.

Agentless variant (experimental). If the environment cannot (or should not) install the agentshield binary, both channels can be evaluated remotely: run shield-server on a reachable host and register clients/agentshield-remote-hook.py (Python stdlib, Claude Code + Codex CLI) as the PreToolUse hook instead. Same verdicts and block format as the local hook. See shield-server.md.

Note on the removed run subcommand. Earlier AgentShield versions shipped an agentshield run -- <cmd> subcommand that evaluated policy and then executed the command. That design was removed after an incident where agentshield run -- rm -rf / actually ran before the block could take effect. AgentShield is now evaluation-only: hooks and the MCP proxy decide BLOCK / AUDIT / ALLOW, and the host (IDE, shell, MCP client) is responsible for executing. This is a deliberate defense-in-depth choice — the evaluator should never be able to execute.


Shell Command Integration

Step 1: Detect the hook mechanism

Check which IDE/agent environment is running:

Step 2: Install hooks

For known IDEs, use the built-in setup:

Step 3: Generic integration (any environment)

If the IDE/agent is not listed above, wire AgentShield as a pre-execution policy check. The host runs the command only if AgentShield approves — AgentShield itself never executes.

Pattern — shell wrapper that evaluates then execs:

Then configure the agent to use ~/bin/agent-shell-wrapper.sh as its shell command executor.

Preferred: use AgentShield's native IDE hooks (agentshield setup ...) wherever possible. Those hooks are wired directly into the IDE's PreToolUse callback so the host still owns execution, and there is zero custom glue.

Step 4: Verify shell integration

AgentShield has no standalone run CLI — verification is done through the live IDE hook or the Go test suite.

MCP Integration

Step 1: Detect MCP configuration

This command:

  • Scans all known MCP config locations
  • Wraps stdio servers: rewrites command to agentshield mcp-proxy -- <original-command>
  • Wraps HTTP servers: rewrites url to http://127.0.0.1:<port>, assigns a local proxy port
  • Creates default MCP policy at ~/.agentshield/mcp-policy.yaml if missing
  • Is idempotent (safe to run multiple times)

Step 3: Manual MCP wrapping

If automatic setup doesn't cover the environment:

Pausing / Resuming

Note: MCP rules remain active while paused. In managed (enterprise) mode, pause is ignored.

To fully remove hooks for a specific IDE, use the IDE-specific disable flag:

Security Model

AgentShield operates as a user-space policy gate. It does not require root access or kernel modules. Be aware:

  • The agent has the same file permissions as the user — it can theoretically modify AgentShield configs
  • AgentShield's config file guard blocks MCP tool calls that attempt to write to its own policy files, IDE hooks, and shell dotfiles
  • For stronger guarantees, set file permissions: chmod 444 ~/.agentshield/policy.yaml
